AMD to Debut "Puma" Mobile Platform for Laptops at Computex

AMD "Puma" Mobile PlatformThis year's Computex is just around the corner and reports are flowing in that AMD's new "Puma" platform for laptops will be released on June 3 (first day of the show) at Computex. Right on schedule!

AMD's "Puma" mobile platform for laptops consists of Turion Ultra CPU (codenamed Griffin) and mobile variant of AMD's 780G chipset (RS780M), the Mobility Radeon 3200 integrated graphics and suitable WiFi modules (from Atheros, Broadcom, Marvell, Ralink).

Expect "Puma"-powered laptops in all notebook form factors like 12.1", 13.3", 15.4" and 17". Some of these models will also feature AMD's discrete mobile GPUs like ATI Mobility Radeon 3450, 3650 and 3850.

SSD support will also be present for laptop manufacturers to tweak around. But still solid state drives are expected to be relatively out of reach for volume business and consumer markets (key targets for AMD's "Puma" Platform). That could, however, change with the arrival of AMD’s 2009 Shrike mobile platform (better known for its Fusion processor), which is expected to see a greater adoption of SSD devices.

Release date & availability of Puma-powered laptops will be clear after the official announcement.
